Helping Friends, Goblins, Colors, and Halloween Vocabulary...

This past week has been lots of fun! We've continued to work on our circle time fingerplays and the children are nearing mastery on their favorites. The children have also enjoyed creating some very simple games as their imaginations grow. The games range from pretending they are puppies to pretending a friend has fallen or is stuck in the mud. The pictures below show the children using teamwork to help a friend up from the "mud." I introduced the children to a story calle

Circle Time, Sunflower Story, and Gross Motor Skill Builders...

The children and I have been having so much fun with our sunflower theme so far! We love the beautiful coffee filter sunflowers hanging high in the window, we love our circle time fingerplays about sunflowers, and most of all, we love the story I've been telling about why sunflowers hang their heads. I adapted the story from Madge A Bingham's Overheard in Fairyland. You can find her telling here. The big kids and I have enjoyed working on our counting through one of our fi

Dress-up Dolls, Pretend Sleepovers, and Kite Flying...

This morning we had a wonderful time after our morning routine. The children and I worked together to make clothing matches as we played dress-up with a set of magnetic dolls. We made up stories all about where the dolls were going to go and why they were dressed the way they were. Our favorite story was about a doll that liked to go out in the rain and stomp in puddles. She also liked to feed the ducks bread and talk to her friend the frog. Once the dolls were all dresse

Campouts, Fine Motor Skills, and Cooking...

Today dawned grey and rainy, so we could tell we were going to have some fun indoors for a change. Once we finished our calendar, weather, and circle time routine, we set up a big tent village. When the thrill of crawling through the long tubes wore off, we had fun pretending we were camping in the woods. The children and I used smooth river rocks to make a pretend campfire ring and put the orange silk in the middle for a fire, then we sat around it and I helped provide som

    Dress-Up, Dandelions, and Races...

Today seemed to be particularly suited to dress-up, so after we moved our calendar tag to the last day of April and finished our last April circle time fingerplays, we moved right along and suited up! First, the children picked the perfect dress-up outfit. One was a mermaid... ...one was a princess... ...one wore a cape (and did lots of spinning around)... ... and one was a mix of a few dress-up items! The children and I came up with a story sort of like The LIttle Mermaid i

Storytelling, Coffee Filter Art, and Backyard Fun...

Today was ripe with opportunities for storytelling. After our morning routine, the gray weather caused us to hunker down. At first, we thought reading stories would be a good idea, but then I suggested that we try to tell a story together, and the children loved the idea. We started out by recasting each child as a character in the story and we ended up with two dogs and their owner. Then we decided the story should happen outside and be about Easter. In the end, our sto
