Apple Circle Time, Apple Tree Art, and Make Believe...

September is well underway, and we are focusing on apples right now. We have a lovely variety of circle time movement rhymes and fingerplays that have to do with apples and apple trees. Here is the one that we begin with:

Way up high in the apple tree

Two little apples smiled at me.

I shook that tree as hard as I could,

Down fell the apples.

Mmmm- they were good!

After our morning routine the children and I talked about how tall apple trees were and named all the colors of apples we could think of.

From there, we moved on to creating apple tree artwork with a sponge dotter and a paintbrush. The children used a dotter with green paint for the leaves, then a broad paintbrush with brown paint for the trunk.

While the paint dried, the children and I had lots of fun playing listening games including Simon Says and a rhyming game. I had a lot of fun mixing some counting into our Simon Says game by asking the children to repeat an action a certain number of times ("Simon says clap five times!").

Later in the day, the children and I worked together to add apples to the painted apple trees. The children (with varying levels of assistance) used a glue stick to stick apple cut-outs onto their trees. We counted the apples on each tree when each child finished adding apples.

We ended the day with a session of dress-up and pretend play. One of the older children suggested that we have a wedding based on a fancy dress she found, so we had a king and queen celebrate a "wedding."

There was a royal baby to put to sleep...

A royal "wedding cake" to approve...

And lots of smiles as we had a royal wedding dance party!

See you tomorrow!
