Bubbles, Bubbles Everywhere!

Melanie Patric

Today we had so much fun learning about bubbles! We began the day by making more homemade bubble solution. Our recipe included 6 c water, 1/2 c Dawn dish detergent, 1 tbsp of cornstarch, 1 tbsp of glycerin, and 1 tsp of baking powder.

As you can see, the children were quite focused on getting every last bit of each ingredient into the bowl.

Stirring was lots of fun, too.

The mix became quite foamy before we let it rest.

While the bubble solution settled, we did our morning routine and included our special bubble fingerplay during circle time. It goes like this:

Bubbles floating in the air,

Bubbles here and bubbles there,

Bubbles floating big and round,

Bubbles floating up and down,

Bubbles high and bubbles low,

Bubbles on my nose and toe,

Blow a bubble,

Up it goes!

Bubbles floating all around,

Bubbles floating to... the... ground!

After circle time, the children and I enjoyed dancing and singing along to several old-fashioned American songs like "Oh Susanna," "She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain," and "Oh My Darlin'."

Soon after music we headed out into the back yard to enjoy our bubbles. We used our badminton racquet to blow multitudes of bubbles. It was fun for the children to try to pop as many bubbles as they could before the bubbles sank to the ground.

The children noticed that some of the bubbles landed on their heads, and sometimes they did not pop, but if a friend touched them with their hand, they popped immediately. We wonder why that is... but we know it's very entertaining!

Next we retested the giant bubble maker. We enjoyed more success making giant bubbles.

It was amazing for us to watch the bubbles unfurl from between the strings and to see all the glorious colors shimmering across the surface of the bubbles.

We wondered what was inside the bubbles and thought about why it was easier to blow a giant bubble when the wind blows.

While the children weren't busy blowing, chasing, or pondering the bubbles, they had fun feeling the slippery, slimy sensation the bubble solution left on their hands before getting a rinse.

Even the little liked dipping his hands into the solution to feel the slippery sensation, though he wasn't such a big fan of getting them rinsed off!

There was lots of gross motor activity as the children raced to chase the bubbles or be the first to pop a big one. Chasing the incidental small bubbles was lots of fun too, and helped enhance hand-eye coordination.

The big kids took turns using the sticks to create giant bubbles. There was lots of success... and sometimes a big surprise as the bubbles popped because they make a splash!

Later in the day the children and I relaxed and read our moon-themed stories plus some books of words.

See you tomorrow!
