Over the years, I've had several parents come to me with concerns about "W-sitting." What is W-sitting, you ask? It's when the child sits on his or her bottom with knees bent backward and outward. It seems harmless. Shouldn't a child be able to sit whichever way is the most comfortable? Does it make that much of a difference? Why does my doctor tell me to avoid W-sitting anyway?
The truth is that it can make a big difference and can delay normal development in some children. Pediatric Physical Therapist Lauren Drobnjak's blog post What's Wrong With W-Sitting does a fantastic job of explaining why it's so important to encourage healthy postures and discourage W-sitting. Here at Blue Sky Daycare, I try to encourage healthy postures including "criss-cross applesauce" and legs-forward sitting whenever possible. I want to help you raise happy, healthy, children!
