Today the children and I had an amazing time playing in the aftermath of the biggest snowstorm of the season! It was a truly memorable day.
We began just like normal with our calendar and weather routines. We changed the calendar over to February and talked about the holidays we'd be celebrating. We talked about Groundhog Day, but since we had so few daycare kids (because of the weather and some scheduled days off), we decided to postpone our Groundhog Day celebration. We had one of our very few moments of using media in which we watched the clip of Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow... you know what that means, right? Six more weeks of playing in the snow!!
After that, we had lots of fun making bread. The children poured and stirred the ingredients.
It was lots of fun for the little in attendance to stir along with a small bowl and one of the pretend kitchen spoons and sift flour through her hands as the bigger kids did the more refined work.
While we waited for the dough to rise, we put on all our snow gear and headed out for some sledding fun. We really bundled up complete with extra socks, scarves, and our warmest clothes.
We walked over to the nearest big hill and worked on carving a sled run into the powdery snow. It was fantastic and after a few trips down the hill, the kids were going very fast!
When we tired of that hill, we trekked on to a different hill. This one was lots of fun, too, though the snow was extremely deep in spots. We were able to make this run even longer, so it turned out to be more exciting to ride down. The little one even took a few rides down on my lap!
On our way home, we came face-to-face with a hawk. The hawk checked us out for a few moments, then flew away to see more interesting things.
By the time we made it home, our dough was (probaby more than) ready, so we launched right into kneading the dough and putting it on cookie sheets. The bread rolls we make always smell wonderful while they bake. The smell made our tummies rumble after so much ourdoor activity. We ate them along with some homemade vegetable soup, and they were so delicious!
At the end of the day, we enjoyed reading The Snowy Day since we had a very snowy day. It was the perfect way to finish the day!
See you tomorrow!
